Charles A. Coolidge '17, member of the Corporation, has been appointed Assistant Secretary of Defense by President Truman, it was announced yesterday. Coolidge, a member of the Boston law firm of Ropes, Gray, Best, Coolidge, and Rugg, has been working in Washington for the past six months arranging foreign loans.

Coolidge will succeed Daniel K. Edwards, who resigned to become U.S. vice-deputy on the North Atlantic Defense Council.

An All-American end on the 1917 football team, Coolidge was also a member of the rifle team while at college. He was president of the Student Council in his senior year, and captain of the R.O.T.C. unit. He served as a captain of artillery in the first World War.
