The nation's armed forces yesterday announced "an urgent need for women in each branch of the military establishment."
Defense Secretary Robert A. Lovett took the cue from his assistant, Anna M. Rosenberg, and called on "our greatest reservoir of human power."
In a release issued by the Boston office of New England Women in the Armed Forces Program, officials say that "man-power includes womanpower." It issues appeals "especially to women in the 18 to 34 age group."
Some observers feel the move mere strategy to get more young men to enlist by draining the female civilian reserve.
Lovett called "thousands of young women," and he is "confident that they will answer this call."
