Council Maps Plan for New Dean System

A new formula to decentralize the Deans Office and emphasize the House system was the topic discussed at last night's Student Council meeting. An ad-hoc committee of Robert H. Cole '52, David L. Stark '53, and Paul D. Sheets '54 presented proposals which will be revised and voted upon Monday night.

The committee proposed that the Housemasters should be on the Administrative Board and that they should divide the duties of the proposed House deans with the senior tutor. This would eliminate the appointment of another senior tutor as outlined last spring by the Subcommittee to the Committee on Houses headed by Ronald M. Ferry, Master of Winthrop House.

Cole questioned the calibre of men who would be willing to take the House dean job, and felt that the Housemasters were academically suitable. Chase N. Peterson '52 countered with, "I think Housemasters are less academic than any other group in the College." Council President Richard M. Sandler '52 replied that "the Housemasters were the kind of person we want the fatherly type."

The Council approved a proposal to improve the method of selecting resident tutors, while voting down Cole's plan that minor disciplinary matters be dealt with by the entry tutors. Most members felt that such handling of discipline would follow anyway without setting up a "sanitary code for tutors."
