Crimson yachtsmen carried off the two big sailing victories of the fall season over the Armistice Day weekend. Yesterday they beat M.I.T. in the finals of the Fowle team-racing trophy. The day before, they finished racing for the Schell Trophy, and brought their score to a winning 181 points. Coast Guard was 14 points behind, and M.I.T. placed third with 165. The two successes now make the sailors New England champions.
The finals of the Fowle Trophy had been continued from last weekend, when the same gales that stopped the Open-Closed game put an early end to the sailing. In the contest yesterday, Jimmy Nathanson won the decisive race out of five, making a great recovery after a had start. In another race, Nathanson recovered again, to join John Bishop and Charlie Hoppin up in front, and so make a team win for Harvard. Also sailing for the College were co-skippers Tim Brown and Tom Carroll.
In the Schell Trophy on Sunday, skippers Bishop and Hoppin ran up the two highest scores of 91 and 90 respectively, each man competing ten times. Hoppin, with Tom Carroll crewing for him, won the 'A' division race, and Bishop and his crew, Butch Horner, topped the 'B'.
Thanks to the two victories, the Crimson will now be able to go to the Mid-Atlantic championships at Annapolis. Should the College skippers win these, they would automatically become the country's East Coast champions. Commodore Bishop forecast they would have a "tough job, but not more so, necessarily, than beating M.I.T." Unfortunately, of the Crimson's winning triumvirate, Bishop Hoppin, and Nathanson, Hoppin will be unable to make the trip down.
