Jayvees Top Freshmen, 6-0, In Evenly-Contested Game

A lone touchdown early in the first period was all that the Jayvees needed to defeat the freshman eleven, 6 to 0, yesterday.

After a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brint Donalson to end Bill Hickey, both squads played on completely even terms. The offensive attacks were both glaringly weak as the ball changed hands continually.

The jayvees staged a 52-yard scoring drive in the opening minutes of play, and this provided the edge. A 14-yard run by halfback Ronnie Messer, and a 17-yard pass completion by Donalson brought the ball to the Yardling's 20. Here Donalson's serial culminated the drive.

The jayvees threatened only twice after that, but a stiff Yardlings defense led by Pat Conmy, Bob Cochran, Dick Koch, Stan Pfahl, and Captain Tim Anderson killed the scoring attempts.

Donalson was rushed by a big Yardlings line and had little time in which to get the ball away, and his passes were wobbly. He was, however, extremely capable as defensive backer-up and kicker. The offensive spark for the jayvees was provided by Messer and Ronnie Noonan, who bucked the line and swept around end for considerable gains.

The Yardlings are still unable to punch over touchdowns, although they did stage several scoring threats. In the second period, quarterback Paul Murphy's passing brought the '55 team deep into jayvee territory, but the drive died when Noenan intercepted a Murphy pass in the end zone for a touchback.

Murphy returned yesterday for the first time since he was injured in the Brown contest. He completed six passes for 105 yards, while four connections by Donalson netted 61 yards.

The most promising men in a weak freshman offense were Murphy, fullback George MacDonald, and wingback Otis Dewan. MacDonald led a drive early in the second half, plunging for 25 yards and two first downs in six attempts.
