Committee to View College Theatre Plan

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Plans for the construction of a College theatre will move closer to realization than ever here on November 26, when a committee appointed by the Board of Overseers meets in Cambridge to consider plans for the construction and endowment of the project.

Theatre critic John Mason Brown '23, chairman of the committee and an Overseer, told the CRIMSON yesterday that President Conant had given the committee "the green light" to go ahead with its work. "While it is still too early to discuss specific plans for a theatre," Brown said, "there is a willingness to consider the project."

Another member of the committee, Archibald MacLeish. Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory, predicted that, If a theatre were built. "It would probably only seat around 600."

Materials Shortage

Because of material shortages, MacLeish said, "the times are not appropriate for the construction of a large auditorium." He added that the Brown committee was also considering plans for a public arts center which would house radio, television and motion picture studios in addition to theatre facilities. But this, apparently, is more of a long range project.
