'Clean,' 'Messy' Rooms Cause Disagreements On Yale's Porter Plan

Some doubt exists whether Yale's plan to have students clean their own rooms is a success, following first inspection Monday.

The United Press yesterday quoted Eli authorities as saying that over half the rooms were "messy," and concluding that higher education and house-cleaning do not mix.

The Yale Dally News, however, reported yesterday that the rooms were "clean, well kept," and inspectors had found "only minor infractions" of the rules. Among these were kerosene lamps with extra fuel. One student had stolen extra pillows from the supply service to put on his sofa, said the Daily News, but outside of this, "everyone has cooperated well."

No official word has come from the university yet, but the Daily News said that the program would be continued.

According to one Yalie, "the rooms are about the same as usual. The maids never cleaned them, anyway."
