Instead of printing up more parking tickets, the Cambridge City Council has finally drawn up a plan for overnight street parking. The new proposal allows free overnight parking near the Cambridge Common and "other park areas." For students who reside in the Houses, however, the Common is almost as distant as the Business School lot.
Since both the Council and the City Traffic Board have decided that street parking at night may be legally permissible, they should also consider the streets which run around the Yard and between the Houses. Only one thousand cars can be accommodated if the City permits parking near the Commons, but another thousand spaces are available on streets like Mt. Auburn, Boylson, and all streets which allow parking on one side during the day. Streets less than 30 feet wide will, of course, have to remain clear for fire-engines and plows.
On October 24, the City Traffic Board will act on this proposal. If the Board aims at making overnight parking not only legal but also convenient, it must extend its' plans to include all large avenues near the University.
