Smith Has Best Average in EIL; Murphy Tops on Percent Basis

Captain Ed Smith's 17.3 points-per-game average is tops in the Eastern Intercollegiate League, according to statistics released yesterday. In addition, the figures reveal that Crimson guard Gerry Murphy is leading the League in field goal percentage.

Smith has scored 21 field goals and ten fouls in three games for 52, sixth best in the League. Jack Molinas, of Columbia, ranks first with 80 points in five games. Murphy has made 11 of 19 shots for .576, Smith is fourth in this department with .412.

In the ten games he has played in to date, Smith has scored 142 points. Sophomore Dick Lionette leads the team with 143 points, but his average is only 10.2 points. No one else on the squad claims a double-figure average. Murphy has made 40 percent of his shots, a team high.

Forest Hansen, sophomore guard on the basketball team, was operated on late Tuesday night for an inflamed appendix. Hansen is not expected to be in playing shape until the last few games of the season.

Otherwise, the team's shooting has not been strong. Norm Shepard's men have made but 27 percent of their floor shots, 61 percent of their fouls. Despite the low shot percentage, the team has managed to average 52 points per game, while opponents have tallied 57.1. The Crimson has, however, committed an alarming 357 fouls in 16 games.
