Passing and signal drills highlighted varsity football practice yesterday as Coach Lloyd Jordan sent his squad through a rather stiff workout, considering the scrimmage with B.H. the day before.
Following brief ealisthenies, Jordan ran various combinations of passers and ends against. Coach Josh Williams' defensive units. The quarterbacks mixed optional running plays with their passing series, but complete lines were not employed in this serial scrimmage.
Quarterbacks Carroll Lowenstein, Gil O'Neil, and Hardy Cox did the tossing to the five ends currently running with the varsity. Sophomore Hank Rate, who was impressive in the B.U. scrimmage, and veteran Fred Ravreby did most of the receiving. Both shook loose from defenders on several occasions.
Five Changes
When the first unit lined up for signal drill and a dummy scrimmage there were five changes in the team which opened against B.U. Rate and Paul Crowley replaced ends Dike Hyde and and Ravrehy. Buddy Lemay was holding down Paul O'Brien's center position, and tackle John Nichols was again on the offensive team in place of Bob Stargol. In the backfield Red Wylie was running as wingback instead of Dave Warden.
Rounding out yesterday's A team were guards Bill Rosenau and Jerry Kanter, tackle Phil Connelly, Quarterback Lowenstein, fullback Johnny West, and tailback Phil Isenberg.
Gordon Injured
In addition to the live tackling in the passing scrimmage, contact work was provided by sending ballcarriers, including linemen, against stationary tacklers. Guard Lew Gordon was banged-up in this drill, but the full extent of his injuries is not yet known.
No injuries have yet shown up as a result of Tuesday's scrimmage. Another encouraging note in this department was the appearance in sweatsuits of appendicitis victims Bob Di Blasio and Art Pappas. Both players should be available for action in a month to six weeks.
