House football squads, with their first games coming up in two weeks, pushed homeless cambridge Latin off the north sector of Soldiers Field yesterday.
In their initial practice, more than 100 candidates showed up to draw equipment and go through wind-sprints and warmup calisthenics. Dolph Samborski, director of intramural athletics, commented that the opening day turnout was almost as large as last year's record-breaking crop and he estimated that another hundred would turn up in the next few days. No candidates will be accepted after next Wednesday.
All squads, some exhibiting a serious manpower shortage, went through a light drill. Eliot, which won the House title last year and then went on to defeat Yale's champion, Berkeley, produced 18 men, a record turnout for one House on opening day.
Kirkland had the next largest squad with 16 and Adams followed with nine. However, Samborski pointed out that Eliot had only two on their first day of practice last year and later added to its squad, finally ending up with a sizeable roster.
The first games will take place on October 11, when a double-header sends Leverett against Adams and Dunster against Lowell. The powerful Elephants do not play until October 13, when they face Winthrop.
Since Lowell, Eliot, and Kirkland possess the most experienced players and the largest squads, coaches pick them as this year's big three. But there are always the unpredictable teams like Dudley which may upset all predictions, they are quick to add.
