Construction of the proposed new Varsity Club Still awaits the Corporation's final green light, it was learned yesterday.
Last May the Corporation voiced preliminary approval to architects' plans for a new, modernistic clubhouse in front of Lowell House. At that time the project met with both attack and support from students and alumni, and so far the Corporation has not given the final go-ahead to the plan.
No action was taken at the Corporation's first meeting this term, it is understood, but the matter may come up for a final hearing sometime this fall. Until the Corporation officially approves the final plans for the new Varsity Club, construction cannot begin on the proposed Lit. Auburn Street site.
The University first announced its intention to build a new Varsity Club on May 3, with the funds coming from the will of the late Allston Burr '89, who in 1912 gave the money for the present Varsity Club near the Union.
Swift approval for the project came from members of the Varsity Club and the baseball, team, but the Alumni Bulletin editorially opposed the building of a new clubhouse and a CRIMSON poll of students on the controversy showed 82 per cent in opposition to the project.
