Soccer Team Prepares For Tough Season

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

"All in all, we should have a pretty good soccer season this year, although there are some pretty rough games on the schedule which could give trouble." Soccer coach Bruce Munro hit this optimistic note Wednesday night after watching his 18-man pre-season squad work out twice daily since last Monday.

Most encouraging is the forward line, where four of the five slots are filled by returning lettermen. The right side of last year's line returns intact, with Ben Goldstein at the wing, and All-New England Charlie Weiss at inside. Captain Ted Wolf, who scored both Crimson goals in the win over Yale last fall, will held down center forward.

Scoring Punch

On the left side, scrappy Jim Johnson is making a strong bid for the inside position, while sophomore Berk Johnson has been looking good in the vacant wing slot. Already the line has begun to show scoring punch in practice.

Also competing for forward positions and adding depth to the line are sophomores Dana Getchell and Pete Baker.

Although graduation took much of the depth out of the halfback line, a good nucleus still remains. "Pants" Pantaleoni, center halfback at the beginning of last year, will probably return to his old position, flanked by Latsi Berger on the right and either Larry Leonard or Getchell on the left.

Big Gap

All important on defense, and a big question mark so far this year, are the two fullback positions. Last year's All-New England pair, Rick Drake and Mike Scully, have graduated, leaving an important gap to fill.

Leading the field in this department so far is sophomore Charlie Ufford, last year's freshman tennis captain and member of the squad which represented Harvard and Yale in England this summer. Competing for the other slot are Dick Hulbert, Bob Harding, and Humph Doermann.

Three Goalles

In the goal, three competitors are fighting to take over the position left by the graduation of last year's Captain Loring Batchelder. As things look now, Dick Craven and Don Harshman will split the early goal duties with sophomore Bob Rosenman a strong substitute.
