The Liberal Union will petition the Faculty Committee on Student. Activities and the Student Council for recognition of a new political magazine. Sanctioned by the Union's full board at a spring meeting, the magazine, The Gavel, will first appear in October.

According to a prospectus submitted to the faculty committee. The Gavel will be published twice a term by students, with faculty, students, and alumni invited to contribute. The financial backing for the magazine will come safely from the H.L.U. and advertising. The magazine will be distributed free to every student of the College.

"The Gavel will attempt to be impartial," said Elwood A. Rickless '51, editor. "That is, we will print articles representing all shades of political opinion.

"Further," he added, "we will try to align ourselves with the views of Americans for Democratic Action; we will invite challenging articles from both Left and Right.'
