The upperclassmen who reported for spring football practice "showed the worst lack of fundamentals I've over come across," Coach Lloyd Jordan told the New York Harvard Club at a dinner this weekend. Jordan added that he was "counting on an improvement of fundamentals over last season," because of increased mechanical training aids.
Jordan said that "if this improvement in fundamentals doesn't help us, we'll have a rough time." He was optimistic, however, about the freshmen who came out for practice, commenting that this group has the potential to be a good football team in its senior year.
New Uniforms, Too
In Keeping with his "start from scratch" policy, Jordan also announced that his squad this fall will substitute khaki whipcord pants for the black satin trousers worn by Art Valley's teams.
The new coach said he plans to use "the unbalanced-line, winged-T type of attack that Amherst used, only it will look better because we have some strength up the middle in Johnny West." Jordan said he would not concentrate entirely on the winged-T attack, but expects "to be able to shift into the orthodox single-wing or T, again emphasizing fundamentals."
Two-Platoon System
Jordan added he would use the two platoon system to as great a degree as the material permits. He pointed out that he was forced into it because his opponents use two platoons.
Elaborating on next season's opponents, Jordan said he considered only Columbia, Yale, and Brown to be in a similar manpower situation as Harvard. Jordan felt that the rest of the teams on the schedule have a manpower edged, "but might be surprised if they take us too lightly."
