Baseball Team Defeats Navy, 7-2; Runners Shade Dartmouth, 76-64

The varsity baseball team won its first Ivy League game of the season Saturday, defeating Navy, 7 to 2. The game was played on Soldiers Field before a crowd of 500, largest of the year.

The only way Stuffy Mclnnis could recognize his team as the same one that had played earlier this season was by the uniforms. Aside from a momentary lapse in the second inning, when the Crimson committed two errors, it was a perfect afternoon of baseball. The Crimson hit safely in every inning except the last.

Barry Turner was credited with a well-deserved victory. Turner, who now has a two and one record, was the master at all times as he limited the Midshipmen to seven scattered hits and two walks.

Middle coach Max Bishop called upon three pitchers for the afternoon's work, but by the time Ed Smith took the mound in the third inning the damage had been done.

The varsity bunched six hits in the first three innings for a total of five runs. Left fielder Bernie Akillian was the important man in the lineup for the locals, hitting safely three times and getting on base once after being hit by the pitcher. He scored three times, and drove in one run.

In addition to the 12-hit attack, the Crimson played exceptionally well in the field. Myles Huntington initiated two fast "around the horn" double plays, and Johnny White started in a third.

The first Crimson run came after Eddie Foynes drove the first pitch of the first inning into deep right center for a triple, and then scored on a single by Cliff Crosby. Three more runs were added in the second when Akillian led off with a single, went to third on Huntington's hit, and scored when the left fielder misplayed the ball.

The Midshipmen picked up two in the third when Pat Corrigan homebred with a man on base and two out.
