College Plans New Varsity Club Next to Lowell House

Construction will begin shortly on a new Varsity Club building, the CRIMSON learned yesterday. The proposed clubhouse, made possible by a gift from the late Allston Burr '82, will be located on the new vacant lot in front of Lowell House between the Phoenix and Fly Clubs.

The two-story building of red-brick and limestone facing has been designed along the lines of Lamont Library by the Boston firm of Coolidge, Shepley, Bulfinch and Abbot, which also did Lamont.

Burr died in February, 1949, leaving the University an unrestricted gift of $1,500,000. In 1912 he gave the funds for the present Varsity Club, adjoining the Union, and in later years expressed a desire to see a new clubhouse built nearer to the Houses.

Immediate Construction

The Corporation has $189,000 now available from the estate to start immediate construction of the new building. A fund large enough to complete the clubhouse is expected by the University as soon as the will is probated.

It is not yet known whether or not the University will revive training table in the new Varsity Club. Facilities for the tables and a snack bar have been provided in the plans for the building should the H.A.A. reverse the decision of last December which ended training meals.

Provost Buck is expected to make a formal announcement of the project this week.
