Jordan Announces 'Cliffe's Class of '53 Scholarships

Announcement of Radcliffe Scholarship awards to over 52 young women was made yesterday by President Jordan.

The award of the Council of Radcliffe College, carrying a stipend of $600, went to Anne Fairchild of New York City, now attending the Riverdale Country School for Girls. This award, Jordan said, is made to the student in the incoming freshman class who shows the most outstanding academic and personal promise.

Ann Hopkins, of Cambridge, and a student in the Buckingham School, won the Departmental Award in History, and award given on the basis of competitive exams. Honorable mention went to Lois Ann Dickson, of Portland, Me. and Portland High School, Lily Emmet, of New York City and Joan Brearley School, and Martha Roland, of Drexel Hills, Pa., and the Agnes Irwin School. Over 59 students took the history examinations.

Winner of the Departmental Award in Mathematics and Physics was Frona Brooks, of Milton, Mass., and Milton High School. Ingerborg Blass, of Stamford, Conn., and Stamford High School, Betty Ann Faus, of Lynn and the Lynn Classical High School, and Babette Pilzer, of New York City and Hunter College High School, received honorable mention. About 63 girls competed for this award.

The College awarded the James Adams Woolson Prize Scholarship in the Classics to Mary Frances Raphael, of New York City and the Brearley School. Fay Raphael, of Boston and the Girls Latin School, received honorable mention.

National Scholarships

National Scholarship Awards of $700 each were won by the following girls: lower New England region, Phyllis Bodel, of Lakeville, Conn, and the Emma Willard School; Middle Atlantic States, Marilya Cornelius, of Altoona, Pa. and the Altoona High School; Upper South, Elizabeth Eilers, of Washington, D. C. and Central High School; Middle-West, Patricia Jasper, of Council Bluffs, Iowa and the Abraham Lincoln High School; and Lower South, Barbara Shaw, of Atlanta, Ga. and the North Fulton High School.

Four girls were awarded the Seven College National Scholarships, given by an independent committee and ranging in amount from 100 to 1820 dollars. Winners of the scholarships are Adrianne Ellesson, of Columbus, Neb, and Columbus High School, Ruth Grand, of St. Louis and the John Burroughs High School, Polly Lewis, of Oklahoma City and Classen High School, and Janet Sellman of Los Angeles and the University High School.

Ann Radcliffe Award

Joanna Bailey of Cambridge, a student in the Winsor School, won an Ann Radcliffe Award. This award is given to students possessing exceptional ability.

Jordan stated that seven scholarship awards have also been made to students by the Radcliffe Clubs of Westchester, Maine, Dotroit, Boston, Rhode Island, Chicago, and Washington. Radcliffe, Jordan added, has also given general scholarships to 23 girls. These scholarships range from 100 to 500 dollars.
