After two crowded afternoons of tennis and with only three matches remaining to be played, it appeared last night that Amherst would sweep both the singles and doubles titles in the Eastern Intercollegiate Lawn Tennis Association Tournament.
Seeded first and second respectively, Billy Smith and Ed Wesley, both of the Jeffs, swept through matches over the weekend with utmost ease; Smith lost his service only once and was never extended; Wesley, a sophomore, not trouble against Park Taylor of Dartmouth in the quarter-finals. He won this encounter, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, and then took Charlie Schaaf of Williams, seeded third, in straight sets.
Harvard fared badly in the singles. Hilliard Hughes, seeded seventh, Broward Craig, and Jack Frey failed to reach the quarter-final round. Bob Bramhall got this far, then ran up against Schaaf, who cilminated him, 6-3, 6-3.
In the doubles, the Hughes-Craig combination was still in the running last night after victories over John Ginty and Jack Reeves of D.C., 6-0, 9-11, 6-2, and Joe Welch and Park Taylor of Dartmouth, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
Hughes and Craig will meet Gerry Monsalvatge and St. John Bain of M.I.T. in the semi-finals on Soldiers Field this afternoon. The winner will meet Wesley and Smith in the finals immediately afterwards. The singles finals will be played at Amherst some time this week.
On Saturday at Andover, the freshmen netmen lost, 5 to 4, and the B team bowed, 6 to 3
