Annex Council Upholds Joint Club Membership

With only two changes in wording, the joint Harvard-Radcliffe committee's recommendations to allow Annex students to participate in Harvard extra-curricular activities won approval yesterday from the Radcliffe Student Council and were sent on to Dean Sherman.

The committee's recommendations were first passed by the Harvard Student Council on March 28, leaving restrictions concerning influxes of Annex students into College clubs up to the Radcliffe Council. The only restriction inserted yesterday by the 'Cliffe Council was that Radcliffe members in College clubs be "on an equal basis" with Harvard members.

The only other rewording for Radcliffe, decided on yesterday, was that the phrase "if these are freely interpreted" be deleted from a point on parietal rules.

Major Stipulations

As passed by both Councils, and sent to the two colleges' dean's offices, the recommendations consist of three main provisions:

1) If Radcliffe has a counterpart of a Harvard organization, students must join the group at their own college.

2) Organizations need not allow joint membership.

3) Radcliffe girls can join Harvard clubs until they can form an autonomous Radcliffe group (20 girls).

D. Broward Craig '50, chairman of the joint committee, has already submitted the Harvard Council's recommendations to Dean Bender and the Faculty Committee on Undergraduate Activities.

Dean's Approval Needed

If the Faculty Committee approves the recommendations allowing Radcliffe girls to join Harvard organizations, Annex authorities would have to approve the plan so that 'Cliffe students would have the official permission to join the Harvard groups.

In considering the proposals yesterday, the Radcliffe Council treated Annex girls on the CRIMSON as a special case and recommended that all restrictions as to number and class standing of correspondents be left entirely up to CRIMSON executives.
