Vandals Elude Cantab Police

Cambridge police, still baffled by two weekend robberies and one assault, are today concerned with a wave of vandalism. To combat the outbreak, Police Chief John R. King has ordered a special alert, directed primarily at route and cruising officers.

As a result of the widespread vandalism, Arthur B. Nichols of 6 Garden Terrace, a retired real estate man and secretary of the Class of 1891, was yesterday forced to contend with 32 broken panes in 16 windows. Nichols had been away over the weekend.

In addition, vandalism was also reported at Cambridge Field, where four trees were destroyed; at Abbey Street, where windows in the National Biscuit Company's plant were smashed; and in Charlestown, where a candy shop has been a constant target for the past week.

Police last night stated that the special alert will not mean more men on duty, but is merely to keep them looking for specific types of disturbances.
