Phillip L. Harris, a graduate student who withdrew from the University a month ago because of illness, was found dead yesterday in his apartment on Chauncy Street in Cambridge. Police said that William L. MacDonald 1G discovered Harris with a Navy type gas mask covering his face. A hose connected the mask to a jet in the kitchen stove from which gas was flowing.
Medical Examiner Dr. Leo T. Myles pronounced that death was due to suicide.
Harris, a former Naval lieutenant and son of a professor of English at Elmira College, left a note explaining that he was depressed over his failure to obtain a job after doing graduate work in sociology at Tufts University.
