If it rains every Saturday, the varsity track team should have one of its best spring seasons in years. Jaakko Mikkola's mudders sloshed into the scoring heights again Saturday afternoon, piling up 94 points against the combined opposition of Boston University and Holy Cross.
The Terriers came in second with 41 points, and the Crusaders were in the show position with 34.
Almost equaling their runaway in the mud against Boston College two weeks ago, Crimson contestants took first in ten of the 16 events. Rain wreaked havoc, as usual, with weight and field marks, but the mire that bogged down the visitors didn't seem to bother Harvard runners.
Rounie Berman went under two minutes in the half for the first time this spring. Usually a front runner, Berman paced himself nicely in sixth position while Crusader distance star Dick Ahern was wearing himself down holding first. In the middle of the second lap, Berman just pulled away from the pack and finished in 1:59.4.
Charlie Durakis clipped off fairly good times in taking both hurdles events. Durakis did 25.4 seconds in the low hurdles and 15.6 in the shorter race--against practically no opposition. The only other two event winners were Gooff Tootell and Crusader dashman Bill Gould.
Tootell had no trouble taking the shot put with a short 47 feet, 11 3/4 inches and the discus with 147 feet, 5 inches. The rest of the put was a sweep by Bob Ray, Don Trimble, and Jerry Kanter, and Al Wilson took third in the discus.
Slow 440
Gould, New England 220 champ, waded through a slow 10.3 to break Dave Carter's streak of 100-yard dash wins. Carter was off form and finished third in a tight 320 behind Gould and Harvey Thayer. Chuck Harwood and Bill Geick were third and fourth in the 100.
Thayer was supposed to be primed to go under 50 seconds in the quarter, but something went wrong and he ran second to Ed Grntsner's 51--mediocre even in the bad weather. Ahern of Holy Cross, paced the mile, kicked on the back stretch, and won in 4:38.1, with Terrior Dick Fitzgerald second and Dave Cairns third.
In the two-mile a 23-year-old BU junior named Bob Foley ran away from easy-striding Crusader favorite George McVey on the last lap to win in 10:02.3. Bill Baker, with the leaders all the way, finished third.
Carter Wins Broad Jump
Carter won the broad jump at just under 21 feet, with Bob Ray a quarter inch behind. Dick Barwise went five feet, 10 inches to take the high jump with Geick third, and Bud Lockett was second to Terrier Jose Barbosa's 11 feet in the pole vault.
Charlie Keith threw the javelin 178 feet, 5 1/2 inches, Trimble was second, and Fred Ravreby fourth. Dick Rubin and Eric Stromsted were second and third to BU's Jim Lang with the hammer.
A Harvard relay squad of Lou Tsavaris, Ed Grutsner, Joe Walsh, and Tom McGrath wound things up with an easy win.
