Senator Joseph R. McCarthy is worth 10 division to the Chinese Communists and many more to the Russians, John K. Fairbank '29, professor of History, told a New York audience Saturday.
Speaking at a conference of The Nation Associates at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Fairbank criticized "the current effort to use our disaster in China as a weapon in domestic politics" as not only "a disgrace to the Republicans who are doing it, but an advertisement of our intellectual weakness concerning Asia."
Then Fairbank made his remark about McCarthy, claiming that the Senator makes us look to Asiatics like "fools consumed by our own fears."
Fairbank called for abandonment of "wishfulness and unrealism" at home as a "real defence against Russia's Asiatic expansion."
