The 1950-51 course catalogue lists only three courses in Far Eastern Languages "primarily for undergraduates." There is little doubt, therefore, that this is a field mainly for the graduate student, or only the most intensely interested undergraduate.
Required are six "approved" courses in Far Eastern Languages and related subjects. Two courses may be in the related fields.
Concentrators must study both of the two basic Oriental languages, but some of the country's finest courses in Far Eastern culture and history serve as a kicker in this field. If this is your idea of a good time, you have your choice of either the old or the modern written Mongolian as well.
Honors candidates must offer seven courses in Far Eastern Languages "or in approved related subjects." In this field, they are inclined to be few and far between. The department, in turn realizing this, often proves lenient.
