The freshman lacrosse team scored its fifth win of the season yesterday, beating Governor Dummer, 7 to 2, on the Business School Field. Gus Palactos led the Crimson scoring with two goals and two assists.
In an election held after the game, the Yardlings chose Roger Alexander Martin of New York City and Strauss Hall as captain. Martin has been a mainstay of the Crimson defense all season.
Good defensive play was one of the main reason why the freshmen won yesterday. Martin and Ted Sexton broke up numerous offensive thrusts by the Governors, mixing good stickhandling with some of the hardest body checks of the year.
The outcome was never in doubt, as the Yardlings took an early lead on Palacios' goal at 5:58 of the first period, and held the advantage throughout the game. Pete Franklin and Norm Hatch added goals for the freshman before Ron Campion scored Dummer's first goal, at 11:02 of the second period.
Palacios Gets it Back
Palacios regained that point at 3:00 of the third period. Picking up the ball to the right of the goal, Gus circled behind the nets, coming around in front to flip the ball into the twine. Palacios also set up goals by Skip Johnson and Dick Cushner, at 3:34 and 9:31 of the third period.
Coach Dick Whitney expressed pleasure over the showing of his midfield combinations. Cushner and Johnson's goals marked the first occasion this season that midfielders have tallied.
Whitney was also pleased by the unexpected return to action of midfielder Ron Huebsch. Huebsch was stricken with the mumps just before the start of the season and was not supposed to be ready to play until Saturday.
