Mundt Bill Elicits Faculty's Protest

Seventy-nine University professors and officers of instruction today condemned the Mundt-Ferguson Bill, which was recently reported out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill would give a three-man commission the power to label organizations as Communist and Communist front and then to inflict penalties on them. The statement said:

"We wish to register our opposition to the Mundt-Ferguson Bill (S 2311). It gravely impairs some of the most precious of our American institutions, freedom of speech, press and assembly. There is little evidence to support the contention that the Communist movement presents a clear and present danger to the existence of free American institutions, which are sufficiently protected by existing legislation."
