Gabler Spins 1-Hitter But Deacons Lose, 1-0

Jim Gabler of Kirkland pitched a one-hitter against Adams yesterday, striking out 19 men, but lost, 1 to 0, because his catcher couldn't hold a third strike on the last batter.

Fred Crafts had apparently fanned to end the game as a no-hitter, when Quent Stiles dropped the ball, permitting him to reach first. Crafts then stole second and third, and scored on Ted Wolf's Texas League single.

Gold Coast pitcher Roger Davis allowed only three hits in taking credit for the close win.

In another shutout, Winthrop, behind Kenny Wells' five-hit pitching, topped Lowell, 3 to 0. Bob Parker got two hits for the Puritans.

Dunster's softball team came from behind to beat Eliot, 7 to 5. Hugh Raphael's fifth inning homer tied the score, and the winning runs crossed in the sixth on a single by Tom Hunt.

Dudley forfeited to Leverett, 9 to 0.
