'Lattimore Is a Bad Security Risk,' Bridges Says at Republican Forum

Senator Styles Bridges (R-N.H.) told a Republican Open Forum audience in the Lamont Forum Room last night "it is not known whether or not Owen Lattimore is a Communist, but I would certainly throw him out of his State Department advisory post because he is a bad security risk."

Bridges defined a "bad security risk" as a "Communist, Communist sympathizer, homosexual, drunkard, or criminal." Is then insisted that Senator McCarthy, who is conducting the State Department investigation, should place Lattimore in this "bad risk" category rather than attempt to accuse him of disloyalty."

Disloyalty or Security Risk

In drawing the distinction between disloyalty and bad security risk, the Republican Senator said that "a government employee who is a homosexual would not necessarily be disloyal, but he most likely would be a bad security risk by being subject to blackmail."

Bridges, who as the active senior Republican Senator was consulted this week by President Truman on obtaining a bipartisan foreign policy, applauded the President's action in his speech.

The Senator added that "we haven't had a bipartisan foreign policy for a long time, but I'm sure if Truman really wants one, the majority of the Republicans will reciprocate."

Following his talk, Bridges debated Charles W. Bailey '50 of the CRIMSON and Carl M. Sapers '53 of WHRB on a "Meet the Press" program on the College's radio station.
