Yale will give a credit course in physical education next fall for the first time in its history, but Director of Athletics William J. Bingham '16 said last night he has no desire to institute a similar course here.
The Yale course, Physical Education 20, will be open to all undergraduates as an elective subject designed to teach the fundamentals of coaching. The exact material to be covered has not yet been decided upon.
There will be no Physical Education major, but more courses will be added in the future until a Yale student can take three one-year courses and a full fifth year of physical education work, graduating with a bachelor's degree, and a certificate of teacher's training.
Bingham explained his stand on physical education courses by saying, "We are a liberal arts college. Athletics and physical education belong in extra-curricular activities."
