Near-perfect pitching highlighted the freshman baseball team's two victories over the short holiday. Tuesday Luke Lockwood and Fred Vonderlage combined to pitch a no-hitter against New Prep as the freshmen romped to an 8 to 0 win; yesterday Bob Ward limited Cushing Academy to two hits in the Yardlings'2 to 1 victory.
Lack of control was Ward's only enemy in the Cushing game; the righthander walked seven and hit two. But this did not prove fatal, for the lone Academy run scored in the fourth without the aid of Ward's wildness. Cushing combined its only two hits, both singles, with a sacrifice to push over the tally.
The Yardlings grabbed a one-run lead in the first inning. With one out, Captain Bob Smith shot a single to right, and John Collins scored Smith from first with a double to right center.
Smith also was instrumental in fashioning the second Crimson run. After Jim O'Brien singled in the third inning, Smith batted him in with a long triple to right field.
The freshman lacrosse team came from behind three times yesterday, beating a stubborn Tabor Academy squad, 8 to 7, on the Business School Field. Norm Hatch scored the winning goal at 8:05 of the final period after taking a perfect set-up pass from Pete Franklin.
Playin without the services of Turk Broder, hospitalized with a broken cheekbone, the Yardlings' defense could not cope with Tabor's speedy attack, letting the Middies take many unopposed shots.
Sherm Boyd of Tabor scored twice within the opening three minutes to make the score 2 to 0. Bitsy Grant, who scored five goals, tied the game with two quick shots, at 4:32 and 5:52 of the first period. Grant added another at 11:40 of the period to give the freshmen a brief lead.
Goals by Fred Browne, at 3:45 of the second period, and Chuck Howard, at 7:19, put Tabor back in front. Just before the period ended, at 10:15, Hatch took a feed from Grant and knotted the score.
Grant, Unassisted
Grant's brilliant solo effort at 5:18 of the third period made the score 5 to 4, but Howard tied it up six seconds later on a long screen shot.
A penalty to Ted Sexton at 7:30 put the Yardlings one man down. Pressing its advantage, Tabor scored at 7:44 on a goal by Chuck Dacey. Hatch tied the score at 10:27 again on a pass from Grant.
A backhand drive by Dave West, 47 seconds after the start of the fourth period, gave Tabor the lead for the last time. Grant tied the score at 5:38 on a shot from the side. Both teams battled indecisively for the ball until a Crimson rush set the stage for Hatch's decisive point.
Grant has scored eight goals in the last two games.
