It took the varsity lacrosse team over half the game to start moving against Tufts on Tuesday, but a slow start was not enough to prevent the favored Crimson ten from scoring a 13 to 7 victory over the Jumbos on the Business School Field.
The varsity seemed unable to coordinate its downfield plays and its defense work during the first half, and was lethargically hanging on to a 6 to 5 edge after two minutes of the third period. Fifteen minutes later some fast playmaking by the first two midfields and the attack had given the Crimson the initiative and a 10 to 6 lead; after that, the sloppy playing was left to Tufts.
Better Playmaking
Except for its bumbling first half, Harvard showed finesse and speed, particularly in setting up its scoring plays and alternating power with screened shots. Midfielder Dick Post scored twice on behind-the-cage passes from attackman Rick Hudner, while three other midfielders, Will Davis, Paul Birdsall, and Ed Thayer solved the Tufts defense with charging shots.
The summary:
First period: Post (Hudner), Ross (Tufts), Post (Hudner), Patriquin (Tufts); Second period: Birdsall (Plissner), Hudner (unassisted), Waring (Hudner). Duryea (Tufts), Plissner (Birdsall), Duryea (unassisted); Third period: Hayward (Tufts), Plissner (unassisted), Davis (unassisted), Ross (Tufts), Birdsall (unassisted), Waring (Plissner); Fourth period: Hudner (Baldwin), Yost (Baldwin), Ross (Tufts), Thayer (unassisted).
