Behind the one-hit pitching of Paul Altrocchi, Lowell House's defending champions opened the season strong yesterday afternoon at Soldiers Field with an 11 to 2 trouncing of Dunster. At the same time, Leverett blew a 2 to 0 lead to Winthrop, then came from behind to tie the Puritans.
Hugh Raphael started the game for the Funsters and was kept on the mound in spite of six runs scored against him in the first inning. The Dunster nine suffered a case of defensive stage fright, and when two hits, a dropped fly ball, a bad throw from the outfield, four bases on balls, a hit batsman, and several wild pitches had transpired, the Bellboys were sitting comfortably on top of all the lead they needed.
Winthrop Home Run
Lowell came close to batting around again in the second, when it scored four more runs. Then Raphael settled down to one-run ball, retiring the last seven men in order. Jerry Ulin picked up the Funsters' lone hit, a single in the third.
Clyde MacKenzie of Winthrop tied up the Leverett game in the fourth with a long home run off Cy Lippmann with one man on. The Puritans picked up two more runs in the same inning on a hit and an error.
Darkness ended the contest at the end of the fifth inning.
