John P. Chase '28 resigned yesterday as hockey coach, a position he assumed during the 1941-42 season. Chase, who coached hockey in addition to his job as a Boston investment counsellor, said he no longer has time to handle both posts.
Except for one bad season immediately after the war, Chase produced consistently good hockey teams, considering the limited practice facilities. His last team before the war was probably his best--it took the Princeton and Yale series and tied Dartmouth which had won 30 straight games. Two years ago, the Crimson tied the Indians for the Pentagonal League championship, then lost in a playoff. This year, Harvard was the only sextet in the country to beat both BU and AO.
Chase, former hockey and baseball star hero, captained the 1927-23 sextet and also the 1932 Olympic team. He coached and captained the University Club between 1928 and 1932. Returning from the Olympics, he played with Brao Burn hockey teams and later the "97" Club, which won the national amateur championship in 1940-41. During the war, he did radar work overseas for the Office of Scientific Research and Development.
Last month, Chase made the initial contribution towards a University hockey rink. He said last night that, despite his resignation--which he termed "one of the toughest things that's happened to me in a long while"--he hopes to be able to make further donations.
As far as a successor to Chase goes, the name of John B. Garrison '31 has been mentioned prominently. Garrison played varsity hockey here for three years, was a member of the 1932 Olmpic team, and captained the 1936 entry. He later coached the American Hockey Association squad (which included Harvard's captain-elect Lew Preston) that toured Europe two years ago. Garrison has played with Chase for 20 years.
Garrison commented last night that he has not been approached by anyone from the HAA. He is currently a salesman for the New England Garter Company
