Two-hit, 16 strike-out pitching by Bob Ward highlighted the freshman baseball team's 13 to 2 romp over M.I.T. at Soldiers Field yesterday. The Crimson committed only three errors while collecting 14 hits, but the M.I.T. squad racked up seven errors.
The Yardlings scored in the first inning when Bob Smith walked, stole second, and came home on Russ Johnson's single. George Chase tripled in the third, and scored on Walt Greeley's long fly. In the fourth Ward singled, made second on a wild pitch, third on John Canepa's one-base hit, and home on another wild pitch.
The Techmen, who got their two hits both singles, in the first and second innings, threatened only in the sixth when they scored two unearned runs. Lenard walked, Patrick made first on a fielder's choice, and they both came home when Usella's grounder went through Greeley's legs.
After scoring in the sixth when Canepa who had walked, was squeezed home by John Collins, the Crimson put the game away in the next inning with a six-run rally, marked by four Tech errors, two walks, a hit batter, and a long home run by Collins. Singles by Ward, Collins, and Bob Smith added the three final counters in the last of the eighth.
