Herschel C. Baker, associate professor of English, was announced yesterday as the new Senior Tutor of Dunster House, beginning July 1.
He replaces John H. Nixon, teaching fellow in Economics, who returns to government work after two years as Senior Tutor.
Baker was graduated from 'Southern Methodist University in 1935, and received his Ph.D. in English from Harvard in 1939. He wrote his thesis on the actor, John Phillip Kemble.
One book written by Baker, "The Dignity of Man," has already been published besides his thesis. The University Press will soon publish a sequel, "The Decline of Man," continuing a study of intellectual thought through the ages.
Baker is married and has three children, Ann 9, William 7, and Pamela 5. He will move into Dunster House with his family in September.
