Lee Is Defeated in Quarter-Finals; Dillingham Fails to Qualify in Dive

Pete Dillingham just missed qualifying for the National AAU one-meter dive finals in New Haven yesterday. Varsity diver Win Briggs finished well behind the freshman star as Bruce Harlan, of Ohio State, successfully defended his crown with 138.10 points.

Harlan was followed by Dave Browning, of Texas, Fietcher Gilders, unattached, from Columbia, Ohio, Hobart Billingsley, Ohio State and Roger Hadlich, Yale junior representing the New Haven Swim Club.

In the swimming competition, Yale freshman John Marshall won the 220-yard freestyle in the world's record time of 2:05.5 and Princeton's Bob Brawner took the 220-yard breaststroke in 2:29.3, an American record. In the same race, Joe Verdeur, of LaSalle, set a world 200-meter mark of 3:28.3.

Jack Calhoun, Ohio State, was the only afternoon qualifier who failed to place in the finals last night. The three-meter championship will be held today in Yale's Payne-Whitney Exhibition Pool, and Dillingham and Briggs will also compete in this event.
