Deacons Take 11th, Gaining House Crown

Kirkland clinched the A League basketball crown yesterday by downing Leverett, 43 to 26. Sparked by George Barclay, the Deacons had little trouble annexing their 11th win of the season. They led 26 to 8 at the half.

Dunsters' A team handed the slumping Lowell's their third straight defeat, 52 to 50. The Bellboys blew a 13 point lead in the second half of the see-saw contest, and a fast-breaking Funster scoring thrust, led by Chuck Brynteson's 21 points, pushed it into overtime.

Don Drummond picked up three baskets in the extra period to clinch the win for Dunster.

Dudley's second-place squad held on by trouncing Winthrop, 50 to 33, behind the fine playmaking of Joe Hennessey. It was the Commuters' eighth win against three losses.

Winthrop's B League team set a new team mark when it piled up 83 points against Dudley's 12. Against the height of the Puritans, the 26 points of Ted Albert, 18 of By Atwood, and 17 of Art Siegal, the Commuter quintet never had a chance.

In other B League contests, Dunster edged Lowell, 22 to 20, and Leverett defeated Kirkland, 38 to 22. The Funsters stalled out their two point lead effectively in the closing seconds. Mike Mollenhoff controlled the backboards to lead the Leverett win.
