A special committee will direct the final publication of Signature Magazine to reduce its debt before the end of the year, Elizabeth Heaton '51, Radcliffe Student Council president, disclosed last night.
The executive board of the Student Council appointed the committee, she said, as the Student Government Association is financially responsible for the magazine's debts. This committee will work with the regular board in devising cheaper means of putting out the spring issue.
Signature's debt, as estimated by the executive board of last year's Council, would mount to $632 by June unless methods of cutting costs are put into action.
Joan Braverman '50, ex-president of student government, and Sylvia Rice '50, ex-vice-president will be in charge of collecting and editing literary material. Jean O'Brien was also appointed by the executive board to supervise business matters.
The business staff will bid for cheaper printing rates. Measures which the staff is considering to slash costs, Miss O'Brien said, include photolithographing the last issue and cutting down on engraving.
Figures compiled by the outgoing executive board of the Council showed that 80 cents out of every girl's dues paid into student government will go toward paying off the debt. Signature cannot suspend publication, however, as advertising contracts require that ads appear in four issues.
The charter of the magazine expires with its last issue this year.
