Dr. Robert Fleming, Psychiatrist in the Department of Hygiene, today, described the typical alcoholic as a married salesman about 40.
The Medical School instructor, speaking before the 27th Annual Conference of the New England Hospital Assembly, said that he came to his conclusion after a two-year study of alcoholic patients in the psychiatric clinic of Boston's Peter Bent Brigham Hospital.
Fleming reported: "The marital status of the patients showed a higher percentage of married people in the alcoholic series compared to the general population, and there was a higher percentage of separations and divorces."
