Varsity athletes will act as College recruiting agents, according to a letter being mailed to presidents of 150 Harvard Clubs across the country by the Undergraduate Athletic Council.
The letter reveals that the athletes will be asked to refer high and prep school students they consider to be good College material to the heads of the local Clubs.
The athletes will not confine themselves to recommending students who are considering applying to the College next fall. They will also speak to secondary school seniors who have been accepted both here and elsewhere, trying to convince them to come to Harvard.
Bingham Approves
William J. Bingham '16, Director of Athletics, approved the program and has offered the clerical facilities of the HAA to help mail the letters. Bingham thus gave official endorsement to encouraging promising secondary school students to come to the College. Informal efforts by varsity athletes to attract students have been going on for some time.
The letter, signed by Frederick B. Edwards, 3rd '50, chairman of the Council, states that the Council has, "unanimously recommended that Varsity athletes become more active in interesting boys in their home towns in applying for Harvard."
The program will start during the coming Easter vacation, when the players go home, and will continue through the summer.
