Phillips, Spitzer To Speak Tonight At JRC Meeting

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Herbert J. Phillips, former professor of Philosophy at the University of Washington, who was fired because of his membership in the Communist Party, will speak tonight at 7:45 p.m. in Emerson D, at a meeting sponsored by the John Reed Club.

Chairing the meeting will be Ralph Spitzer, ex-associate professor of Chemistry at Oregon State College, who was dismissed for suggesting inquiry into the Lysenko theory. Spitzer will add a few comments on the Mundt-Ferguson-Nixon Bill.

The topic under discussion will be "Academic Freedom and the Cold War." Phillips will give his version of why he lost his job. The professor was dismissed on January 22, 1949, and told that membership in the Communist Party, per so disqualified him from retention on the faculty of the University of Washington.
