Hockey coach John P. Chase '28 donated an undisclosed sum last night to open the fund raising drive for a College hockey rink. The gift was made at a dinner in honor of the hockey team, given at the Harvard Club of Boston.
At the same dinner tow seniors were presented awards for their performances this season. Goalie John 'Chase was awarded the John Angler trophy for being "the most improved player." Shorty Minot, who played third line wing this year, received the John Tudor trophy for contributing "the best team spirit."
The members of what Coach Chase calls "the hockey family" will still need to stage an intensive drive to collect the $700,000 necessary for an indoor rink, but until an initial gift was given no formal solicitation could be made in the game of the University.
Of the $700,000 needed only $400,000 is for actual construction; the additional sum is required by the University as a permanent endowment fund for the upkeep of the rink. Under present Corporation policy no University building may be built without a maintence endowment.
Before the dinner, Coach Chase and Freshman Coach Stan Priddy played on a Weston Country Club sextet, made up largely of Harvard alumni, which beat the Yardlings 10 to 3 in an informal game at the Boston Skating Club.
