Jordan Appoints Maras of Amherst New Line Coach

Head football coach Lloyd Jordan added a third assistant--and his second line coach--to his staff this weekend. The new man is Joseph Maras, 34 years old, line coach at Amherst under Jordan and wrestling coach there for the last two years.

With spring practice scheduled to start tomorrow, Jordan must still name an end coach and a junior varsity assistant. The appointment of Maras, following that of Ted Schmitt, another lineman, indicates that Jordan may have both an offensive and a defensive line coach.

"I feel honored and proud to be associated with Harvard and Mr. Jordan,' Maras commented last night. A native of Hibbing, Minnesota, Maras played tackle and end for Duquesne University, captaining the team in his senior year.

Played for Steelers

Maras then played six years at center and end for the professional Pittsburgh Steelers. At the same time, he also worked as a chemist for the Jones and Laughlin steel company in Pittsburgh.

Entering the Navy in 1943, Maras served for three years as a gunnery officer, including 15 months on the heavy cruiser Boston.

In 1946, Maras went to Champlain College as line coach, moving to Amherst two years later.

Maras will start working with Jordan today and will move to Cambridge some time during the summer. He is married and has a three-year-old daughter. It is not yet known whether or not he will also coach wrestling here.
