MacLeish States Wars Not Answer

Delivering the principal convocation speech at the inauguration of Margaret Clapp as eighth president of Wellesley College, Archibald MacLeish, Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory, yesterday said that the crisis of our age cannot be settled by a resort to arms.

"It is on the competitive battlefield of creative labor, not on the battlefield of exterminating war, that the real issue will be settled," MacLeish said, emphasizing the role of a liberal arts education in the current conflict of ideologies.

Realistic Future

MacLeish's speech followed an address by Miss Clapp in which she stated that a woman's college career must train her to "think realistically about the future." MacLeish added that the fundamental choice between individual freedom and institutional authority could only be made through a thorough understanding of the "fourteen hundred million . . . who are now stirring and moving in the long dream of their history . . ."
