Pentagonal Hockey League representatives will make the final decision soon on whether they should expand their League to include Boston College, Boston University, and Northeastern or set up an additional Eastern Intercollegiate League, the CRIMSON learned today.
The athlete directors of Pentagonal colleges who usually meet only once a year, in December, may hold a special session this spring to consider proposals of Boston sportswriters and local hockey coaches for revising the League.
If the Pentagonal teams wish to continue in competition for ht League Championship Hobey Baker Trophy, it is improbable that the League will be expanded. Under the original provisions of the Trophy only Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Dartmouth were eligible. Brown was added to the League this season.
The Trophy could be retained if the proposed Eastern Intercollegiate League, which would include BU, BU, Northeastern, and the Pentagonal teams were formed. Under this plan, the autonomy of the New England and Pentagonal Leagues would be maintained. Games will be counted for participation in any or all of the three leagues.
Crimson coach John Chase and the coaches of BU, BU, Northeastern and Brown favor the projected Eastern League. Chase said yesterday that "the present New England League is unbalanced and the Pentagonal League is too small. An additional larger league would certainly heighten local hockey interest."
Before the war the Quadrangular League, now the Pentagonal, was involved in a similar arrangement as a member of the International League which included the Canadian League of Montreal, Queens, Toronto, and McGill. Each team played two games below the border and one above. This league collapsed because of the consistent superiority of the Canadians and travel complications.
At present the soccer team is the only Harvard squad participating in two leagues. The booters are members of both the Eastern Intercollegiate and New England soccer leagues.
