Harold M. "Josh" Williams of the University of Pittsburgh will be Lloyd Jordan's backfield coach, William J. Bingham '16 announced last night. The 45-year-old football mentor is the second assistant from Pitt to be appointed to Coach Jordan's staff.
When reached by the CRIMSON at Monaca, Pa., last night, Williams said that "I am happy to have the opportunity to join Coach Jordan's staff, as I have always held Harvard in high regard."
Williams, who graduated from Pitt in 1931, played right halfback in Jack Sutherland's single-wing system. He served as Sutherland's backfield coach in 1937 and 1938 and later in the same capacity at the University of Florida. From 1941 to 1947 he worked with T and Split-T formations at Temple University, but has coached a single-wing backfield at his alma mater for the past two seasons.
The new coach plans to be in Cambridge Monday in time for the opening of spring practice the next day. His wife and two children will move here in June.
Coach Jordan had requested a Harvard graduate for his coaching staff and was referred to Clarence E. "Chief" Boston '39, head coach at New Hampshire. Boston apparently refused the more remunerative coaching post at Harvard because he did not want people to get the impression that he was a one-year coach. After leaving his jayvee job at Harvard, Boston served under Earl Blaik for a year, and has been at UNH only one season.
End coach Elmer Madar, jayvee coach Ben McCabe, and freshman coach Henry Damar of Art Valpey's staff still remains in Cambridge. But of the three only Lamar of Art Valpey's staff still remain if not as a football coach then in some other capacity, since Jordan has already tentatively decided upon his other assistants
