Smithies Takes Over As Head of Economics

Arthur Smithies, professor of Economics, will replace Harold H. Burbank, Wells Professor of Political Economy, as chairman of the Department of Economics effective July 1, 1950, it was announced yesterday.

In other changes, Paul D. Bartlett Erving Professor of Chemistry, will succeed George B. Kistiakowsky, Lawrencs Professor of Chemistry, as Chemistry, Department chairman, while John M. Gaus, professor of Government, will replace Kenneth B. Murdock '16, Higginson Professor of English Literature, as head of the Committee on Higher Degrees in American Civilization.

Dean Mason was appointed chairman of the Committee on Higher Degrees in Political Economy and Government for the academic year 1950-51.
