A more stringent circulation policy, aimed at checking undergraduate "abuse" of Lamont Library, has been a partial success, according to Librarian Philip J. McNiff.
Near the beginning of this year, stealing and hiding books in the library forced Lamont officials to add several hundred volumes to the closed reserve section and institute spot checks on these books to ensure that they were not kept out too long.
Facilities are holding up under the strain of March hour exams and papers, McNiff stated yesterday, though student cooperation "could be better."
Ideally, there are ten copies of a particular book for every hundred prospective users. Five dishonest men can halve the ratio and "cause trouble for 100 others," McNiff pointed out.
Library policy is to give users "as much freedom as they can stand," officials put it yesterday.
