Listen and attend, O Best Beloved, for this is the story of how the Red Book got its tale.
Once upon a time there was a Class of 1952, and it lived in the Forest of the Yard, and it lived and it worked and it played much in the manner of all the freshman classes that had gone before. And the deeds of this class were to be written up in a great book called the Red Book, and all this was as it should be.
Now the members of this class went to the editor and said to him: "O Editor-in-Chief, when will we see this Red Book that you are preparing for us?" And the editor answered in most wine tones, and said: "When yon are registered for sophomore year (remember the date, Beast Beloved), the book will he ready."
And registration passed, and the members of the class came again to the editor in the form of an investigating committee, and asked: "O Editor-in-Chief, when will we have the book you promised us?" And the editor looked solemn, and answered: "The book will be distributed before you are gone for the Christmas holiday (the date is most important, Best Beloved)."
The new year arrived, and great numbers of students now went to the editor and inquired: "O Editor-in-Chief, where is the book which we were told was ready many months ago?" And the editor tooked gravely at them, and replied: "The book will be ready when you are registered for the spring term (do not forget the date, Best Beloved)."
And spring registration came...
